Note: The 55th Regiment was one of many engaged at Gettyburg on July 3, 1863. Of the 10,000 men designated for an assault on the Union Army at Cemetery Ridge, over 6,000 never came home again. It's been said that the trail of wounded that General Lee led back to Virginia was over fourteen miles long.
