William and Martha Harmon Cobb were still living in the same house with five of their children in 1860. They still did not own any land and had only $162 worth of personal property. By that time, John Harmon Cobb, age 23, like his older brother James, worked as a carpenter. Two of their younger brothers, William W., age 18, and Richard Jerry, age 16, were employed as farm laborers. John Harmon Cobb could read and write and his younger brothers and sisters had attended school in the previous year.

Vianah (Gardner Cobb) was from a respectable Cleveland County family. Her father, my 2nd great-grandfather, James Lafayette Gardner, was a well-educated small land owner. He worked variously as a farmer, mechanic and teacher.
Around 1857, Vianah's father ran Andrew Beam's mill. James Lafayette Gardner was well known for holding debates with local scholars at a nearby school. He was a deep thinker and one of the best debaters. He also made sure that all of his children were educated, including his daughters.
